I love ‘em! Maybe because I am one. I think they add dimension and color to classes and campus life. I was intimidated by everything when I first returned to school. Non-trads are a definite minority. It seemed that no matter where I was, I didn’t fit. I didn’t fit at school because I’m not 20. I didn’t fit in the community because I’m temporary. At the ballgames, students look at you oddly like maybe you shouldn’t be in their section. I remember the first weeks of classes, how people would think I knew the answers or when they were talking about their lives, they would look and me, and say, “I’ll tell ya later.”

From the other side, I’m sure it’s odd having someone in class that’s your mom’s age, but I’ve learned I’m only the mom of three. I’ll say when I don’t agree or my life experience has taught me that x,y, or z works better. (If I’m part of the conversation or you’re my friend.) I’ll work my tail off when I’m in your group or your partner, because I believe that’s what it means to be part of a team. I will push to get good grades because it’s something inside me. After three years with you, I still have no idea how you can turn out a paper in an hour that takes me six, how you can party like rock stars and still get your homework done, or how you can study for a test for an hour and I study for four, and we get the same grade. I have also learned that sometimes perceptions are all in my head, and not reality.

I will honestly be sad to leave in the spring. I will hold many of you in my heart for the rest of my life. I can’t wait to see what you become.

and there’s my novel, Seth Sinclair. Listen to Biscuits and Gravy next Wednesday morning on KAOR, because as you know… we’re having nontrads on the show, and we’ll be hearing their stories.
